September 8, 2010
Another 1600MW power would be added to the national grid by the end of this year, prime minister Sheikh Hasina has said.
Hasina was addressing a rally at Shikolbaha, Chittagong on Wednesday, after inaugurating a 150MW peaking power plant.
This declaration came amid a severe power crisis across the country. If the prime minister’s pronouncement turns true, total power production will finally meet the total demand.
At present, average production is only 4000MW against a demand of about 5500MW.
Addressing the rally at the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) ground, the prime minister said her government is moving ahead to carry out a plan of adding a total of another 4,000MW power to the national grid by 2015.
Hasina also vowed to set up a 2,000MW coal-based plant soon in the port city.
The rally was presided over by Akhteruzzaman Chowdhury, president of Awami League Chittagong (South) District unit. Primary and mass education minister Afsarul Ameen, state minister for power Enamul Haque were also present.
Hasina inaugurated the third Karnaphuli Bridge after attending the rally.
