HSC exams begin with record low expulsion

The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent Alim and HSC in Business Management examinations under 10 education boards begin throughout the country with a record less incidents of unfair means on the first day. Education Ministry sources said, some 45 examinees were expelled on the first day of examinations across the country. Among them, 4 students were expelled under Dhaka Board, 5 students under Rajshahi Board, 1 under Comilla, 6 under Jessore, 4 under Chittagong, 9 under Barisal, 4 under Dinajpur Board, 1 under Madrasah and 11 under Technical Education Board. There were no reports of expulsion under Sylhet Education Board. Four invigilators were expelled under Dhaka Board. Read more

HSC, equivalent exams begin

Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations began across the country today with a total of 618,308 candidates from 7,237 educational institutions registered for the examinations. The HSC and HSC-equivalent exams are being held in 1919 centers under eight general education boards, one technical and one Madrasha education boards. The highest 153,398 students appeared at the examination from Dhaka Board while the lowest 18,340 from Sylhet Board. A total of 59,354 examinees are sitting for the examination under Madrasha Board while 64,121 from Technical Education Board. Read more

Dhaka Medical College reopens

Dhaka Medical College resumed its academic activities on Saturday after a 10-day closure centring on a clash between two factions of the college unit Bangladesh Chhatra League, in which the unit’s general secretary was killed on March 31. Most residential students reached the hostels, which were re-opened on Friday, and attended classes and examinations, said the college principal, Professor Quazi Deen Mohammad.  He said, ‘I hope medical students will not go for a further political chaos which may hamper their academic activities and they should concentrate on their studies.’

Rajshahi College, University & medical college also closed

Authorities indefinitely closed Rajshahi College and Rajshahi Medical College Friday shortly after mayhem at Rajshahi University.  The decisions came from separate emergency meetings of the two colleges’ academic councils to “avoid any untoward incidents on the campuses”. Female students were ordered to vacate the hostels by 10am on Saturday, and male students by 5pm Friday. “Tension surfaced on Rajshahi College campus and its residential halls just after clashes at Rajshahi University,” principal professor Ali Reza Mohammad Abdul Majid told bdnews24.com. Every time I encroach upon the private spheres of the students which they let me willingly do I end up gleaning many stories of a discordant note sandwiched between the natural proclivities and chosen or forced pursuing. Khulna Medical College closed after clashes

Authorities on Friday closed Khulna Medical College for indefinite period and asked the students to vacate the hostels by Saturday morning. “Following a clash on the campus, the college’s academic council took the decision for indefinite closure and directed the students to leave the hostels by 8:00am on Saturday,” the college’s principal Prof Abu Bakar told bdnews24.com. The clash between Awami League-backed student body Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jamaat-e-Islami’s student front Islami Chhatra Shibir erupted at Hostel-1 at around 10:00pm, Prof Bakar said.

Seminar at BM College on MDGs and 60th Anniversary of Human Rights Declaration

A day-long seminar on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, was organized recently by the Government B.M. College Barisal and the UN Information Centre (UNIC) on the college premises. Eighty brilliant students from twenty departments (four from each) together with their Chairmen took part in the seminar.

Interns call off strike at SBMCH

Interns of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital on Sunday called off the strike after the authorities concerned had assured them of meeting their demands. They went on a wildcat strike Saturday morning to press for six-point demands, including ensuring security of physicians, improving health and sanitation condition, reducing number of visitors.

Disaprity prevails in secondary education: report

A high level of disparity prevails in secondary education countrywide, which in turn is widening the social inequality, finds a study that highlights the rural, urban gap and poor management in madrasa schools. With admission at secondary level being competitive, children of well-off families have the best chance of getting into good schools, contributing to a growing rich-poor divide, revealed the report titled ‘Secondary Education: challenges in parity’.
