Rjashahi University reopens on June 1 amid tension

Rjashahi University, the second largest public university in Bangladesh, reopens on June 1 after a unscheduled closure for 80 days. Meanwhile, students began arriving in the residential halls from Saturday. The university administration took this decision at a recent syndicate meeting attended by teachers, prominent student organizations, local leaders of the political parties, local people and the traders of the university adjacent area. Chittagong University reopens after a week

Chittagong University reopened on Saturday after the campus was closed for one week following clashes between Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir. Additional police were deployed on the campus to prevent a recurrence. Classes were held in a few departments, but the students attended in poor numbers. Authorities closed the university for a week after 25 students were injured on May 15 as the pro-Awami League BCL and Jamaat-e-Islami- backed ICS activists clashed to take control of the residential halls. Prime Minister unhappy about education

The prime minister is concerned about the quality of education, the chairman of University Grants Commission said on Tuesday. Sheikh Hasina urged the commission to take more care to improve the quality, Prof Nazrul Islam told reporters after a one-and-a-half-hour meeting with her at her office.  He said the government was willing to pass the Private University Act, made by the 2007-2008 caretaker government, in parliament. Dhaka has 45 private universities and the commission is not going to allow more. Private universities will be allowed in divisional cities outside Dhaka, Islam added. Read more

BUET team wins Int’l architecture award

A 4-member team of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has grabbed first position in an international design competition held in USA recently. The team comprises Sheikh Ahsan Ullah Mojumder, Assistant Professor of Architecture of BUET and his teammates Dilruba Ferdous Shuvro, Arifur Rahman and Dr Sharmin Sultana. A team of Australia secured second position while an US team held third position in the competition. The competition was jointly organised by ‘Fight for the Children’, ‘Architecture for Humanity: Seattle’ and ‘American Institute of Architects: Seattle’. Read more
