The cyclonic storm ‘Aila’ was likely to intensify and move in a northerly direction and cross West Bengal-Khulna coast by noon or early afternoon, the Meteorological Department said. The storm was about 475 km southwest of Chittagong port, 435 km southwest of Cox’s Bazaar port and 345 km southsouthwest of Mongla port at 6 am Monday, said a special weather bulletin issued Monday morning. Rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely at one or two places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Sylhet divisions in next 24 hours till 6:00pm today. Weather may remain mainly dry with partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country, Met Office said. Dhakaites soaked in rain again for a good half-hour late Friday night. Sylhet, Rangpur and some other parts also had welcome shower after scorching hot days worsened by power cuts countrywide. Rains, accompanied by gusty winds and frequent lightning, set in at 11:20pm and continued for some 15 minutes, prompting many to get drenched by rainwater in joy, bdnews24.com correspondent Tayabur Rahman said. Dhaka swelters under record temperature

The capital Dhaka clocked a new temperature record for 14 years when the mercury shot up to 38.5 degree Celsius Friday. The last time, the temperature touched this point was on April 24, 1995. Like the capital, the whole country is simmering under a heat wave. Met experts said there is no chance of kalbaishakhi storm in the next two to three days, negating any chance of a cool-down. Met office sources said the current average temperature is 5 degree Celsius higher than normal across the country. Read more

At least 5 dead in ‘Bijli’ wake

At least five people, including two children, were killed as Cyclone Bijli struck the Bangladesh coast on Friday night, said a food and disaster management ministry official. Deputy secretary of the ministry, Md Sultan Ul Islam Chowdhury, briefed reporters on the damage and death toll collated up to 5pm on Saturday. Over 600 houses and about 650 hectares of cropland were damaged by the tropical storm that made landfall overnight on the southeastern coast, he said. He said good preparation was taken in 15 districts of the coastal areas to combat calamity. Read more
Cyclone Bijli hits coasts, weakens

Cyclone Bijli hit the coastal areas of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar last night. Strong wind coupled with heavy rain started blowing at around 7:30pm. It may take another 4-6 hours to cross the coasts, said a late night Met office bulletin. The storm lashed the offshore island of Sandwip, coastal upazilas of Banshkhali and Anowara in Chittagong and Chakoria, Kutubdia and Moheshkhali islands in Cox’s Bazar. At around 10:00pm it was crossing the area with the maximum wind speed of 80 to 90 kmph (kilometre per hour). Read more
Cyclonic storm Bijli lurks over Bay

The first storm of the cyclone season that begins in April is on the horizon. The deep depression over the southeast and central Bay of Bengal has turned into cyclonic storm ‘Bijli’, a weather bulletin said Thursday. Brewed in the west central and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal at around 3am, the cyclonic storm moved slightly northward and hovered over the same area. The storm was centred at around 9am about 875 km southwest of Chittagong port, 815 km of Cox’s Bazar port and 760 km of Mongla port, the bulletin by Meteorological Department said. Read more
