Govt. prioritizes technical training to develop skilled manpower

Education Minister Nurul Islam Naheed on Tuesday said the government is giving priority on vocational and technical training to turn the country’s huge population into a skilled manpower. Despite resource constraints and lack of adequate number of institutions, the government is committed to remove the illiteracy from the country by 2014, the minister said while inaugurating “National Training Session in the field of Vocational and Technical Training” at the auditorium of Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics (BANBEIS). Medical team starts work to prevent swine flu

A seven-member team of physicians started working at the Benapol check post of Jessore on Wednesday morning to identify and prevent swine flu. The team will examine all the passengers and labourers crossing the borders from dawn to dusk every day, said Dr Nazmul Ahsan, team leader and health officer of Sharsha Upazila. Health officials posted at Benapol land port started work from Apr 27 but are yet to find anyone infected with the virus. Every day, around 1,500 passengers and hundreds of labourers pass through the Benapol check post with goods-laden trucks from different provinces of India, said Fazlur Rahman, immigration police inspector at the check post. Manpower that is high in demand

MANPOWER export from Bangladesh of semi-skilled and unskilled workers of all categories and even of professionals like doctors and engineers are declining as a consequence of the global economic recession. However, an opportunity presents itself in the form of demand for well-trained nurses from this country. The global economic crisis has not in the least reduced the demand for nurses in the developed countries in great numbers as there is no way to shake off indispensable nursing services in their medical institutions. It is estimated that the annual vacancy rate is approximately 9 per cent for nurses in the USA and projections anticipate a shortage of 800,000 nurses by 2050. Read more
Bangladeshi manpower market faces debacle

Bangladesh is going to lose its men power market following activities of various militant and fundamentalist groups and passive role of its high commissioners in different foreign countries. This allegation was made by speakers at a seminar on ‘forthcoming Saudi Arabia visit of Primer Sheikh Hasina: problems and solution for Bangladeshi expatriates in Saudi Arabia’ organised by Bhorer Kagaj at the National Press Club yesterday. The speakers said Bangladeshi workers in different countries are facing serious problems and also being harassed nowadays following recent publicity and propaganda over militant and fundamentalist activities.

Sudan to hire more workers from Bangladesh

Sudanese Foreign Minister and Deputy Secretary General of the ruling National Party Dr Nafie Ali Nafie said the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers and import of jute from the country would increase in the coming years. He held out the assurance when Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, now in Kuala Lumpur to attend a 3-day general assembly of Malaysia’s ruling party, called on Dr Nafie yesterday. Dipu Moni informed her Sudanese counterpart that Bangladesh has immense resources of trained and semi-skilled workers, which Sudan could exploit for its economic and infrastructure development. Young Bangladeshi wins top award in USA

Dr. Faisal Hossain, a young and meritorious Bangla-deshi Engineer has won the outstanding New Faculty Research Award from the American Society of Engineering Education South East Section (ASEE-SES). He studied Civil Engineering at Tennessee Technological University in USA (United States of America). The award giving ceremony will be held in April at the annual meeting of the organization. This year’s meeting is scheduled to be held in Mariett, Georgia. Each year the organization ASEE-SES recognizes at least one faculty member in engineering who has less than six years of teaching or research experience and who has demonstrated excellence in both teaching and research. Malaysia cancels 55,000 visas for Bangladeshis

Malaysia on Tuesday cancelled visas for more than 55,000 Bangladeshi jobseekers, which were approved back in 2007, citing the impact of global economic recession on its manufacturing sector. These workers were scheduled to enter Malaysia gradually. Labour and Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the government is aware of the move and trying to negotiate with the Malaysian authorities.
