Sheikh Hasina’s cabinet sworn in - 23 ministers, eight state ministers

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina was sworn-in- as the Prime Minister on Tuesday leading Bangladesh to democracy at the end of a two-year unrepresentative rule by an emergency government backed by Army. The new Prime Minister and the ministers of her cabinet were administrated the oath of office by President Iajuddin Ahmed at a simple ceremony at Bangabhaban in the evening.

Selection of Cabinet members by the Awami League-led grand alliance is at the final stage. According to AL sources, the forthcoming cabinet is likely to be of 45 members - 30 full-placed ministers and 15 others as state and deputy ministers. Details, however, could not be known immediately. Cabinet members of the victorious AL-led grand combine which bagged majority of the seats in the 9th parliamentary election will take oath at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban at 6:30pm tomorrow (Tuesday). Outgoing President Iajuddin Ahmed will administer oath.
CEC satisfied with overall environment, expects 75 per cent turnout

After sudden visits to some polling centres yesterday, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda said this time overall voter’s turnout would be over 75 per cent in the parliamentary polls. He said that he was happy with the pace of vote casting across the country. “I am happy over the pace of vote casting and so far the polling across the country is peaceful and I hope that rest of voters will be able to cast their ballots within the time,” the CEC said while talking to a group of journalists.

Govt take steps to preserve voter list

The caretaker government has set in motion a Tk 208 crore project for preserving a “flawless voter list” in order to strengthen the democratic system, said finance adviser AB Mirza Azizul Islam on Tuesday. “This is part of the reform plan that the caretaker government undertook and if implemented will secure a flawless voter list for the future,” Mirza Aziz told bdnews24.com.
Govt to sit with Hasina, Khaleda over ‘smooth’ transfer of power

The interim government will meet with the chief of the two major alliances, Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, for a smooth transition to democracy through handover of power to an elected government, the government spokesperson said on Monday. Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman, who also oversees commerce and education ministries, said the meetings would take place whenever two leaders agree to sit as they are busy electioneering ahead of the generaled elections slated for Dec 29.

The government and different recruiting agencies have jointly taken massive initiative to make Bangladeshi workers worthy of employment in foreign countries by providing them adequate training. “Over eight lakhs people are working in different foreign countries and they are sending a huge amount of remittance to Bangladesh. If they were provided proper training and other knowledge, they would be able to send more remittance to the country,” the government’s and recruiting agencies’ officials said at a press conference held at the National Press Club on Wednesday.
President urges Sudan to recruit Bangladeshi agro-experts

President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed on Monday urged the Sudanese government to recruit agro-experts from Bangladesh to expedite their agricultural development. “Sudan can recruit Bangladeshi experts to meet some of their needs, especially in agriculture, IT, pharmaceuticals, education and other sectors,” he said while Ambassador of Sudan to Bangladesh Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman made a farewell call on him at Bangabhaban here.

Govt invites parties to speak on media

Fifteen political parties are being given the chance to deliver electoral speeches on state-run Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar. “The speeches will be broadcast from Dec 17 but the draft texts have to be submitted beforehand (by Dec 15),” information secretary Jamil Osman said on Sunday. The information ministry has sent letters to the 15 parties, Osman added.
