SC bins govt stay petition against HC order

The Supreme Court yesterday said no to hear a government petition clearing the way for mayoral function by Chittagong City Corporation Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury. Chamber court of Justice M Tafazzal Islam refused to hear the government petition for staying the operation of a High Court order. On December 4, the High Court, upon a writ petition, stayed for three months the government order debarring Mohiuddin from functioning as Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation.
Wait for the tall building to fall apart

Although the caretaker government is removing different kinds of makeshift and permanent structures from Hatirjheel-Begunbari project area one after another, there has been no decision on the 15-storey BGMEA building. The authorities on December 20 last removed a filling station, a portion of a multi-storey private building and some makeshift slum structures. Removal of the BGMEA building is a matter lying with the top-level authorities, said Md Shah Alam, chief engineer of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk).
Rajuk yet to finalise DAP for Dhakacity

Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha has failed to finalise the capital city’s detailed area plan on schedule and proposed the ministry extend the deadline for another three or six months. Missing the deadline for the third time, the city development authorities had fixed December 30, 2008 to finalise the detailed area plan, known as DAP, but in the face of protest and criticism from urban experts, town planners and green activists, the authorities gave up the decision to issue the gazette finalising the draft DAP.
Spurious liquor factory found in city

Police yesterday unearthed a spurious liquor factory and seized 408 cans of bears at Pallabi in the city. Acting on a tip off, Pallabi police raided a house at about 4pm and seized 408 cans of spurious bear produced in the clandestine factory. Materials of spurious wine making were also seized.
MPs-elect take oath today, tomorrow

Members-elect of parliament belonging to Awami League (AL)-led grand alliance will take oath this afternoon at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and the remaining MPs-elect will be sworn in tomorrow. Outgoing Speaker Jamiruddin Sircar will administer the oath at the ‘oath hall’ completing all preparations in a hurry as the alliance is set to assume power on Monday or Tuesday.
Chittagong MPs-elect vow to make city world-class

Four new MPs, who have been elected from the Chittagong city, said they would work for the infrastructural development of the country’s second largest city to elevate it to world-class ones. The MPs-elect told the news agency over phone about their plans and strategies as to how the port city could be developed apart from fulfilling people’s other demands.
Metropolises to use electronic cash registers from Thursday

Electronic cash registers will be introduced in the country’s six metropolitan cities on the first day of the new year, NBR said on Wednesday. “District towns will have to use the device from July 1 next year,” the National Board of Revenue said in a press statement. Hotels, restaurants, fast food shops, sweetmeat shops, furniture shops, beauty parlours, community centres, shopping centres, departmental stores, general stores, big and medium retail and wholesale traders in the city corporation areas must use ECRs for accounting procedures, the statement said.

The dwellers of the bustling capital city Dhaka grabbed a chance to spend their times in a relaxed mood on Monday as most of the vehicles kept off the city roads as the nation went to the ninth parliamentary polls.
All the main thoroughfares of the capital wore a deserted look with no vehicles on the road, although the government imposed no restrictions on vehicular movement on the main streets.
VoIP materials worth Tk 20 lakh seized

The Rapid Action Battalion seized voice over internet protocol materials worth about Tk 20 lakh and arrested a person in the Sylhet city Saturday afternoon.
The arrested was identified as Shahed, 36, of Agpara under Mirabazar area in the city.
