Aktel offers ‘Push Mail’ service

Mobile phone operator Aktel has launched ‘Push Mail’ service for its postpaid users to make their communication more convenient and easier. The service was announced at a press conference in Dhaka on Sunday. With the service, users can send or receive emails with any handset.
ACC files 11 cases against 23 BTCL officials

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday filed 11 cases against 23 officials of Bangladesh Telecommunica-tions Company Limited (BTCL) for misappropriating Tk 40.63 crore. Separate 11 first information reports were lodged with Ramna Police Station against the officials of BTCL, formerly known as Bangladesh Telegraph and Tele-phone Board (BTTB).
BTCL earnings up despite fall in subscribers

Revenue earnings by Bangladesh Telecommunica-tions Company Limited (BTCL) increased by Tk 696.60 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2008-09 over the corresponding period of last fiscal despite a significant fall in the number of its subscribers. BTCL, once Bangladesh Tele-graph and Telephone Board (BTTB), earned revenues after beginning its journey as a limited company on July 1, this year.

GLOBAL mobile usage has reached more than 3.6 billion users, with 15 new connections established every second, more than 1.3 million per day, many of these in most remote areas and underprivileged corners of the world. More than 30% people of Bangladesh have mobile phones whereas only 13% have bank accounts. Mobile phones customer penetration is three times higher than bank’s customer penetration.
Warid wins Brand of the Year Award for ‘Best Cellular Company in Pakistan’

Lahore, Warid Telecom (Pvt) Limited has won ‘Brand of the Year Award’ again in 2008, in the category of ‘The Best Cellular Company in Pakistan’. Prime Minister of Pakistan - Yousuf Raza Gilani presented the award to Faisal Ejaz Khan - Acting Chief Executive Officer, Warid in Pakistan. This is the second time in Warid’s three and half years of successful operations in Pakistan that Brand of the Year Award has been granted to the company. In 2007, Warid was the winner of ‘Brand of the Year Award’ in the category of GSM operators and service providers.
Grameenphone publishes its first CSR Report

Grameenphone Ltd on Sunday publicly launched its first Corporate Social Responsibility Report at a simple ceremony organized at a local hotel in the city. The report was unveiled by Oddvar Hesjedal, Chief Executive Officer of Grameenphone Ltd in presence of senior representatives from both the public and private sectors. The objective of the publication was to create better understanding among the key stakeholder groups about Grameenphone’s good corporate governance practices and its contribution to the socio-economic development of the country.
TeleTalk eyes loan from China

State-run mobile operator TeleTalk seeks to get $221 million loans from the Chinese government, mainly to expand its network to provide third-generation technology (3G). The operator said its board had accepted the loan proposal, now pending with the Economic Relations Division (ERD) for further processing. ”The telecommunication ministry is in talks over the $221 million loan proposal,” said Md Mojibur Rahman, managing director of TeleTalk.
Grameenphone submits final IPO application

Grameenphone filed its final application for an initial public offering of $65 million (Tk 449 crore) with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday. GP’s board of Directors had earlier approved a proposal for an IPO of its shares, subject to necessary approvals and market conditions, GP said in a statement. The price for the IPO has been proposed at Tk 7.00 per share, subject to SEC approval.

GP seals $60m pre-IPO deals

Grameenphone (GP) yesterday sealed its $60 million worth pre-IPO deals with 50 institutional investors, aiming to start trading on secondary market by end-January. The price of each GP share is expected to be Tk 7 after the cellphone major built price following a ‘price discovery’ procedure as the pre-IPO process completed Wednesday.
