Seminar at BM College on MDGs and 60th Anniversary of Human Rights Declaration

A day-long seminar on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, was organized recently by the Government B.M. College Barisal and the UN Information Centre (UNIC) on the college premises. Eighty brilliant students from twenty departments (four from each) together with their Chairmen took part in the seminar.
Interns call off strike at SBMCH

Interns of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital on Sunday called off the strike after the authorities concerned had assured them of meeting their demands. They went on a wildcat strike Saturday morning to press for six-point demands, including ensuring security of physicians, improving health and sanitation condition, reducing number of visitors.

Then another week comes by with its share of even more assignments, quizzes and class tests. To be honest, that’s not all. In the middle of all the hubbub of getting an education, we do get time for ourselves. There’s lot of scope for entertainment in the campus if you want it.
Disaprity prevails in secondary education: report

A high level of disparity prevails in secondary education countrywide, which in turn is widening the social inequality, finds a study that highlights the rural, urban gap and poor management in madrasa schools. With admission at secondary level being competitive, children of well-off families have the best chance of getting into good schools, contributing to a growing rich-poor divide, revealed the report titled ‘Secondary Education: challenges in parity’.
Formulate policy to stop student harassment Speakers tell discussion

The meeting was organised under the banner of ‘Repressed Students Council of BCIC College’ run by Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation in Mirpur in the city.
Held at Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium, the discussion was co-sponsored by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad and Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Goshthi.
In a written statement, Council Convener Sumaia Hasan Ishan mentioned about alleged malpractices that are prevalent in the college under the leadership of Principal Abdul Aziz Mondol.
These include collection of lakhs of taka in the name of college magazine which was never published, holding of examination every day for strengthening teachers’ welfare association by selling khata to the students, turning the institution into a real estate company in the name of implementing a housing scheme for the teachers when there is no common room for female students and no Shaheed Minar on the college premises.
The council also placed a 10-point demand which include withdrawal of the principal and his associates, re-employment of two innocent terminated teachers, establishing a Shaheed Minar and a common room for female students, cancelling private tuition and selling khatas by the teachers, and observing national and cultural days with due importance.
Journalist Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul suggested for a committee comprising students, teachers and guardians to resolve the problem.
AN Rashida, a representative of the teachers, said the initiative should be taken at the local level.
Vice-president of Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Goshthi Prof Badiur Rahman, while chairing the meeting, suggested for an act against sexual harassment instead of formulating a policy.
The speakers also suggested for the installation of complaint box in educational institutions.
Justice Golam Rabbani, General Secretary of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote Golam Kuddus and Advocate Masuda Rehana Begum of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad were present on the occasion.
10-point leap in HSC, equivalent exams pass rate

Just over 76 percent of students have passed Higher Secondary Certificate and other equivalent examinations this year, the pass rate being more than 10 percentage points higher on last year’s figures, the education adviser has said.
The examinees will be able to collect their results from their schools from 4pm onwards, Hossain Zillur Rahman announced at a press conference on Wednesday.
The total number of GPA-5 scorers this year is 19,108 under the seven HSC boards, twice the number of last year.
Combined results from all nine boards, including madrasa and vocational boards, show a 76.19 percent average pass rate, which is 10.59 percentage points up from last year. The pass rate was 65.60 percent in 2007.
As many as 22,045 students from all nine boards gained GPA 5 this year, double the 2007 figure of 11,140.
A total of 4,66,570 out of 6,20,008 students passed out from all nine boards. Of these 3,71,382 passed out of a total 4,96,139 students from the seven HSC boards.
The Dhaka education board topped the HSC pass rate list with 82.31 percent.
The lowest pass rate was for the Barisal board at 65.28 percent.
The pass rate for Rajshahi board was 71.87 percent.
Comilla board showed a 77.33 percent pass rate.
Jessore board showed a pass rate of 72.24 percent.
The pass rate for Chittagong board was 67.96 percent.
Sylhet board saw a pass rate of 71.87 percent.
The pass rate of the madrasa board was 82.43, jumping up from 74.31 last year.
The vocational education board showed a pass rate of 81.27 percent, soaring from 68.13 percent in 2007.
Some 674 institutions saw a 100 percent pass rate in HSC examinations this year, up from 434 schools last year.
Some 41 institutions had zero students pass, down from last year’s 60.

HSC ’08 results published - A record 74.85% pass

The results of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Examinations-2008 under seven education boards saw pass percentage of 74.85 while as many as 19,108 examinees achieved highest grade point average (GPA)-5.
Last year, 64.27 per cent students passed and 10,205 students achieved GPA-5 in the second largest public examinations. The percentage was 63.92 in 2006, 59.16 in 2005, 47.74 in 2004, 38.43 in 2003, 27.09 in 2002, 28.41 in 2001 and 37.05 in 2000.
The average pass percentage in the HSC under seven education boards, Alim examinations under Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board and Business Management examinations under Bangladesh Technical Education Board is 76.19 against 65.60 of last year and a total of 22,045 examinees secured GPA-5 compared to 11,140 examinees of last year, 9,864 of 2006, 5,534 of 2005 and 3,047 of 2004.
As many as 6,12,381 students — 3,38,650 boys and 2,73,731girls — appeared in this year’s HSC and its equivalent examinations and 466570 of them — 338650 boys and 273731 girls –passed.
Pass percentages for boys and girls are 76.69 and 75.57 against 66.48 and 64.42 of last year.
The HSC results were published yesterday under the grading system introduced in 2003. The examinations began on May 29 and ended on July 10.
The comparative statistics of the examination was published yesterday at a press conference at the Ministry of Education where Education Adviser Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, Chairmen and officials of nine education boards were present.
Among the seven education boards, Dhaka Board secured the top position with the pass rate of 82.31 per cent while the pass rate in Comilla Board 77.33, Jessore Board 72.24, Rajshahi Board 71.87, Sylhet Board 71.17 per cent, Chittagong Board 67.96 and Barisal Board 65.28 per cent.
The rate of success under Madrasa Board is 82.43 per cent and Technical Education Board 81.27 per cent.
Under all education boards including Madrasa Board and Technical Education Board, a total of 22,045 examinees - 13,426 male and 8,619 female — have secured the highest Grade Point Average (GPA)-5.
Of them, 10,702 students are from Dhaka Board, 3,399 from Rajshahi Board, 957 from Comilla Board, 1,764 from Jessore Board, 1270 from Chittagong Board, 425 from Sylhet Board, 591 from Barisal Board, 2886 from Madrasa Board and 51 from Technical Education Board.
Students from business studies and commerce group have marked a significant progress with pass percentage of 82.99 while 76.06 per cent passed from science group and 69.06 per cent from humanities group.
Under Dhaka Board, the top ten institutions based on number of students securing GPA-5 are Notre Dame College, Dhaka City College, Viqarunnisa Noon College, Dhaka Commerce College, Ideal School and College, Motijheel, Bir Shreshtha Noor Mohammad Rifles Public School and College, Holy Cross College, Rajuk Uttara Model School and College, Dhaka College and B.A.F. Shaheen College, Tejgaon.
Highest 1,189 students of Notre Dame College in the capital secured GPA-5, followed by Dhaka City College with 987 students and the city’s Viqarunnisa Noon College with 663 students achieving the same grade point average.
In Dhaka Board, 123285 students out of 149781 passed the examinations with the pass percentage of 82.31 against 70.77 of last year. A total of 40,752 students appeared at the examinations and of them, 27,696 passed. The pass percentage is 67.96.
Among the1,34,362 candidates under Rajshahi Board, 96,564 came out successful with a pass percentage of 71.87 against 61.89 of last year. Under Jessore Board, 69,880 students appeared in the examinations and 50,478 passed. The pass percentage is 72.24 against last year’s 59.48.
Under Comilla Board, 38,819 examinees out of 50,202 passed with a success rate of 77.33 per cent against 65.75 of last year. Barisal Board had 31,796 examinees and 20,758 of them passed. The pass percentage is 65.28 against 55.63 last year.
Under Sylhet Board, 19,366 students sat for the examinations and 13,782 came out successful with the pass percentage of 71.17 against last year’s 65.98.
Under Madrasa Board 61,724 Alim examinees took the exams and 50,882 came out successful with the pass percentage of 82.43 against 74.31 of last year.
