National children art competition in June

National children graft arts competition titled ‘Mercantile Bank Baishakh-e Chhobi Ako Jaishthy-e Prodarshini Jatiyo Shishu Chitrakala Protijogita’ organised by Patua Quamrul Hassan Art School will be held in June, says a press release. All the children of the country from three to 16 years old are requested to participate in the contest. Competition will be held in four categories. These are: Group-A: Age 3 to 5+, B: 6 to 8+, C: 9 to 12+ and D: 13 to 16 years. Street theatre for working children

The Semi-Formal Education Bureau has begun a basic education programme for working children in Sylhet with assistance from UNICEF and local NGO-Friends in Village Development (FIVDB). Art folio chronicling the history of Bengal

Recently Mutual Trust Bank Ltd. has launched a folio, titled “Our Liberation War: Down the Path of History.” The folio is a collection of reproductions of artworks by 12 renowned Bangladeshi painters — Qayyum Chowdhury, Samarjit Roy Chowdhury, Hashem Khan, Rafiqun Nabi, Farida Zaman, Jamal Ahmed, Mohammad Eunus, Tarun Ghosh, Sheikh Afzal Hossain, Shishir Bhattacharjee, Nisar Hossain and Iftikhar Uddin Ahmed. Painting on children’s issues

A painting event for children was held in Tangail town last Thursday. The theme was children’s issues. Tangail unit of National Children’s Task Force (NCTF), an NGO, organised the programme at Shaheed Smriti Poura Udyan in association with Bangladesh Shishu Academy, and NGOs UPAMA and Save the Children Australia. A total of 60 child members of NCTF took part in the programme and painted on a range of issues like child labour, child abuse, child trafficking, early marriage etc. Read more

Padakkhep Children’s Festival ‘09 ends

A two-day children’s festival, arranged by non-government organisation Padakkhep Bangladesh, ended yesterday at the Shawkat Osman Auditorium, Central Public Library. The festival featured diverse cultural performances, including songs, dances, recitation and staging of theatre by children from across the country. On the first day, chief guest, Industries Minister Dilip Barua, inaugurated the programme. Among the speakers at a discussion prior to the colourful cultural programme were folk researcher, Dr. Shamsuzzaman Khan; former secretary Syed Margub Morshed and poet Asad Chowdhury. Read more

Ishkool on Ekushey TV

Ekushey TV will air the entertainment-educational programme “Ishkool” tonight at 7:45 pm. The programme aims at generating awareness on the public education system in Bangladesh. Jointly produced by Ekushey TV and Plan Bangladesh, the programme focuses on issues like corporal punishment at schools, drop outs, absence of students and teachers in the classrooms, an education system that forces students to memorise without understanding the study material and so on. A live discussion follows, highlighting the problems shown in the drama section of the programme, and possible ways to change the situation. Read more
