My Home Away from Home

May 31, 2009

Living in the Antelope Valley has its advantages. There is almost no rush hour traffic, no crowds to fight and a population of only half a million people. But it also has its disadvantages a lack of quality international cuisine and shopping. It is a diverse place but not enough to include a Bangladeshi restaurant. When I miss my country and crave anything Bangladeshi, I get in my car and drive 100 miles to Little Dhaka. It’s not a city or part of a city. It is a mere restaurant/grocery store in a suburb of Los Angeles called Artesia. Read more

Ziaur Rahman: From sector commander to president

May 31, 2009

GENERAL Ziaur Rahman, by the time he was assassinated in an army putsch in Chittagong deep in the night of May 30, 1981, had been president of Bangladesh for four years. If you add to that period the months in which he was effectively in charge as military leader of the country since November 7, 1975, you could say he was in control of Bangladesh for five and a half years. In all that time, there were no fewer than eighteen (some say the figure is higher) coup attempts against him. He did not survive the nineteenth, which was ostensibly led by Major General M.A. Manzoor. Read more

anything you can do….

Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviour, activities and attributes that a particular society considers appropriate for men and women. The distinct roles and behaviour may give rise to gender inequalities, i.e. differences between men and women that systematically favour one group. In turn, such inequalities can lead to inequities between men and wome. Society has a way for things. It tends to determine typecast, a social blueprint that chalks our action and behaviour. While determining ‘gender’ society takes into account the biological attributes of men and women and make clichés for social interaction. Read more

Eyewear – Frame it!

April 29, 2009

In a world that is being laid siege upon by a blizzard of contact lenses, spectacles are still in reigning order. After all it is so much easier to stick something on top of your eyes rather than inside them! And what with cleanliness, cost and overall hygiene, spectacles are just the easier and better option. And don’t trust those fake fashionistas that frown on eyewear. Hey, if Miranda Priestly could carry them off with panache in The Devil Wears Prada, so can you! The key is to find a frame that fits your face. Read more

Soaring Up to Cloud 9 and Diving Down to Reality

April 28, 2009

My eyes bulged seeing the 5 digit numeral on the price tag! Was I mistaking the code number of the kamiz for its price?
No, it was indeed the price!
The set I was admiring so far, didn’t look all that appealing now. The fabric was quite ordinary, so ordinary in fact that even I could make it.

All it really takes is finding time out of your busy schedule. Then you mix a little bit of this with a little bit of that and clamp a scandalous price tag to the fabric and pray for a rich dimwit to come pick it.

The perfect date

April 21, 2009

Dating…the sweet old time spent in getting to know each other, sharing thoughts and hoping that it leads to something more permanent. Yes all those Hollywood flicks were not lying: going on a date is a big deal. After all a date is the only official time when two people really get to hang out, talk and find out more about one another in person. Yes, late night phone calls are adventurous and e-cards at work are cute but it is actually when you spend time in each other’s company that really tells you whether this rendezvous is worth the effort. Going (coco) nuts!

April 15, 2009

My earliest memories of coconut go back to my home-village, where palm trees were ubiquitous. Our house was surrounded and secluded by tall trees that always had drinks to offer. I, for one, could not wait for the subtle, heavenly taste of sweet coconut water, especially in summer. Read more

the journey continues…

April 9, 2009

WITH Pohela Boishakh only a week away, the foodies around town are gearing up to celebrate our culture and everything Bangladeshi…our way. Any Bangladeshi would say that one of the best things about our culture is the food, be it the simple pleasure of dal bhaat, the addictive lure of the ilish, or the unadulterated delight of biryani. Our quest to (re)discover the delights of our cuisine, took us all over Dhaka, which is dotted with restaurants satisfying this very demand. The following is a list of the top five places which we think are best to sample deshi delicacies. Read more
