Visions from Nepal and Bangladesh

A group drawing exhibition titled “Rhythmic Lines” is now on at Asiatic Art Gallery, Nimtoli. The exhibition is an output of a workshop, which was recently held at Asiatic Art Gallery. Five painters from Nepal and 23 painters from Bangladesh have participated at the exhibition. The exhibition stands out for featuring the artists’ experiments with new forms and motifs. Consequently many unusual images have appeared. The exhibit predominantly includes drawings. Drawing is a form of visual expression and is one of the major art forms.
Event: Ei desh amar, ei matio amar

Caring Glory, an education centre for the disabled children, organised an awareness and tight-based programme titled ‘Ei desh amar ei matio amar’ at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the city on Friday. Mothers of 50 disabled children were present as chief guests at the programme. The programme began with a chorus song titled ‘Ei Padma, ei Meghna ei Jamuna Surmanodi tote’ with the participation of disabled children.

Numerous young local video-art makers took a keen interest in a mind-boggling video art exhibition (not to be confused with TV or experimental cinema) held at Goethe Institute recently. Dhaka University Film Society also took part in this event, which continued for three days, as the exhibition had to travel elsewhere, outside Bangladesh.

Srijon, cultural organisation working for raising old Bengali songs, organised a musical session at the Poet Sufia Kamal Auditorium of the National Museum in the city on Saturday to reminiscence the nostalgic Bengali songs. It was Srijon’s the 77th arrangement by the organisation as a part of its regular monthly performance. Besides, Rabindra and Nazrul Sangeet, artistes also performed songs of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra and more.

Wife of the well-known artist, Ahmed Nazir, and daughter-in-law of the oldest living legend in Bangladesh’s art world, Safiuddin Ahmed, she has been a star pupil all through her academic life.
Lathi khela’ at Charukala

A spirited demonstration of ‘lathi khela’ was on at the Bakultala premises, Charukala (Faculty of Fine Arts, DU) yesterday morning. The demonstration was part of a five-day workshop that began on December 22. Shadhona — a centre for advancement of South Asian music and dance — arranged the workshop, which was conducted by artiste Sutapa Pradhan from Medinipur, West Bengal.
Event: Documentary film festival at Liberation War Museum

A weeklong documentary film festival on the war and human rights started at the Liberation War Museum in the city on December 21. Four films were screened yesterday the Liberation War Museum from 3:00pm and 5:30pm. These were - “Voice Warriors of ‘71″ (84 minutes/ Bangladesh), ‘Tales From the Margin (23 minutes/ India),’ ‘An Oppressed People is Always Right’ (45 minutes/ Denmark) and ‘The Last Rites’ (17 minutes/ Bangladesh).

Dhaleswari Kabita O Natya Sangathan organised a cultural function at open stage of Motilal Degree College under Daulatpur upazila in Manikganj on Wednesday celebrating Victory Day. Shah Alam, President of Dhaleswari Kabita O Natya Sangathan, formally inaugurated the function. Anwar Hossain, principal of Motilal Degree College; Rokonuzzaman Khan, principal of BBC College; Omar Faruk, officer in charge of Daulatpur police station; cultural personality Azharul Islam, Abu Sayeed Musa; Monjurul Karim and Jalal Uddin addressed and Salman Khan, secretary of the sangathan conducted the function.

The debut album of Canada-based Bangladeshi band ‘Thirteenth Note’ was launched on December 19 at the auditorium of Russian Centre of Science and Culture. The album titled “Hajarta Mile” features ten songs, mostly themed on patriotism and contemporary political issues.

To celebrate the Victory Day a daylong programme titled ‘Wheel- Channel i Bijoy Mela’ (Victory Fair) was held at the Tejgaon office premises of Channel i on December 16. Channel i organised the event and whole programme was aired live on Channel i from 11:05am to 6:00pm. The programme included songs, recitations, plays, interviews, recounting of memories of the war and more. There were also a book fair, painting and photography exhibitions on the Liberation War as well.
