Pitha: The taste of winter

CITY winters are quite dull. You wait and you wait but the thrill of feeling the chill down the spine, walking on dew-laden grass dotted with white sheuli, seeing your breath freeze in mid air; are rare sights in any urban setting. However chilly or not, the city mornings are roofed with a foggy veneer of mist, which at times are pierced with cosy rays of the sun. And one thing urbanites never miss during these moments is sipping the morning tea with a bite of piping hot bhapa pitha.
Cultural celebrations of Victory Day

Dhaleswari Kabita O Natya Sangathan organised a cultural function at open stage of Motilal Degree College under Daulatpur upazila in Manikganj on Wednesday celebrating Victory Day. Shah Alam, President of Dhaleswari Kabita O Natya Sangathan, formally inaugurated the function. Anwar Hossain, principal of Motilal Degree College; Rokonuzzaman Khan, principal of BBC College; Omar Faruk, officer in charge of Daulatpur police station; cultural personality Azharul Islam, Abu Sayeed Musa; Monjurul Karim and Jalal Uddin addressed and Salman Khan, secretary of the sangathan conducted the function.
Music reflecting patriotism

The debut album of Canada-based Bangladeshi band ‘Thirteenth Note’ was launched on December 19 at the auditorium of Russian Centre of Science and Culture. The album titled “Hajarta Mile” features ten songs, mostly themed on patriotism and contemporary political issues.

To celebrate the Victory Day a daylong programme titled ‘Wheel- Channel i Bijoy Mela’ (Victory Fair) was held at the Tejgaon office premises of Channel i on December 16. Channel i organised the event and whole programme was aired live on Channel i from 11:05am to 6:00pm. The programme included songs, recitations, plays, interviews, recounting of memories of the war and more. There were also a book fair, painting and photography exhibitions on the Liberation War as well.

A three-day celebration by ‘Banglar Sanskriti Andolon’ under the ‘bakul’ tree at the Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA), Dhaka University was vibrant with the presence of a young crowd. Arranged on the occasion of Victory Day, the programme featured traditional Bengali songs (Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti, songs of five poets, Gano Sangeet, folk songs) along with music by contemporary artistes, pala gaan, plays, film screening, performances by indigenous artistes, puppet show, art exhibition and more. The aim was to entertain and inspire the enthusiastic audience — reviving the spirit of our Liberation War.
Bangladeshi documentary in Kathmandu Film Festival

A documentary titled ‘Mehendigonj of Barisal at Estuary of Meghna,’ based on river erosion directed by Fuad Chowdhury and produced by United Network Limited (UNL) funded by the community members of the affected area, has been selected for showcasing in the 6th Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival 2008. The five-day long festival will be end on December 15. Director of the documentary Fuad Chowdhury is now staying at Kathmandu in Nepal to showcase the documentary in the festival.
Artist Matlub Ali’s show in Kolkata

A week-long solo art exhibition of Prof Matlub Ali, a noted artist of Bangladesh, held at the Central Gallery of Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata in India recently. Prof Matlub Ali is a teacher of the Faculty of Fine Art of Dhaka University. A total of 60 works of varying sizes using water colour, drawing and oil paintings were displayed in the fifth solo show of the artist. This was the first time exhibition of Prof Ali that was held on abroad.

Cultural programme generating awareness

Amorai Pari Jote, Pabna, organised a discussion and cultural programme marking International Day for Abolition of Slavery. The programme was held at Pabna Shahid Minar premises on Tuesday. NGO personality Abdur Rob Montu chaired the programme and presented the keynote paper on the occasion while NGO personalities Abu Sayed and Nasrin Rashid spoke among others on the occasion.
