A ‘jatra’ production on Jyoti Basu

Seeking to cash in on the huge popularity of the late Marxist politician Jyoti Basu, a jatra (folk theatre) group here is going to mount a production on him.

Titled “Alor Sikha Amar Jyoti”, the jatra, scheduled to go on stage by this month-end will begin with Basu’s death on January 17 this year and then go back 40 years to 1972 when the leader engaged in confrontation with Congress party at Baranagar in Kolkata’s northern fringe.

Gautam Ghosh on Lalon, and his latest project on the bard

That the 19th century mystic bard Lalon Fakir continues to inspire filmmakers of India and Bangladesh is once again evident as Indian helmer Gautam Ghosh’s latest project is near completion.

A few years ago, leading Bangladeshi director Tanvir Mokammel did a feature film on Lalon with Raisul Islam Asad in title role. Ghosh’s movie, “Moner Manush” has Tollywood (mainstream film industry of Kolkata) star Prosenjit as the bard.

Rabindra melody stirs souls in Sylhet . . .

A two-day district conference and cultural festival organised by the Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilan Parishad ended in Sylhet Friday night.

A colourful procession was taken out in the city on Thursday afternoon marking the formal start of the programme. Later in the evening, eminent writer Selina Hossain formally inaugurated the event at the Sylhet stadium. The speakers included Professor Mesbah Kamal of Dhaka University, treasurer of the central committee of the Rabindra Sangeet Sammilon Parishad-Mainuddin Nazir and Sylhet district convener Suprio Chakravarty. The speakers stressed the need to study Tagore for removing the ills from society and our day-to-day life.
